Google launched a ChatGPT competitor but does it live up to the hype?

There were a few AI product launches this week. Google released Gemini, it’s newest AI platform, while Grok, Elon Musk’s annoying chatbot, rolled out to X Premium users. Apple, meanwhile, tried to keep up by releasing...an open-source machine learning framework. Not quite as exciting. That said, the AI industry continues to be the most tumultuous and exciting area of tech and this week provided more than a few examples.

Elon Musk’s snarky, anti-woke chatbot, Grok, started rolling out to X Premium Plus users on Thursday. X users who paid $16 a month, or $22 via the app, for a blue checkmark started receiving the added feature of getting roasted by xAI’s premiere generative AI chatbot. - Maxwell Zeff Read More

Google’s launch of Gemini yesterday was like a bellowing announcement that a new king has arrived in the AI space, but Apple had its own AI launch, or more like a quiet whimper that tried to go unnoticed. The iPhone creator released an open-source machine learning framework, MLX, that runs on Apple’s chips. Presto, the self-acclaimed “leader in drive-thru voice automation” wants artificial intelligence to take your order. The drive-thru AI company works with Carls Jr, Chili’s, and Del Taco, and it partially runs on ChatGPT. Sam Altman reportedly has no equity in OpenAI, a strange move for a tech founder, but new reporting from Wired this weekend shows the CEO would profit from an OpenAI deal to buy AI chips. OpenAI signed a previously unknown deal back in 2019 to spend $51 million on advanced chips from a startup Sam Altman is reportedly personally invested in.
